Since July 2022, Prof. Achim Kampker has helped shape the development of Fraunhofer FFB. Together with his fellow institute directors, Prof. Jens Tübke and Prof. Simon Lux, he oversaw, among other things, the commissioning of “FFB PreFab” and the establishment of “FFB Fab,” and played a decisive role in advancing the industry-oriented development of battery cells.

Spin-off Focuses on Customized Battery Cells

The goal of Fraunhofer FFB is to sustainably establish internationally competitive battery cell manufacturing expertise in Germany and Europe. With the “FFB Fab” as an open research factory, an industrial-scale research infrastructure is being created to support companies along the entire production chain. The planned spin-off will focus on the production of customized battery cells and semi-finished products in small batches for demanding applications, such as in medical technology, aerospace, and specialized automotive applications. It will thus provide structured access to a high-growth market segment. At the same time, valuable feedback from industrial applications will flow back into Fraunhofer FFB’s research. The Fraunhofer Society is participating in the spin-off.

Cooperation Remains a Central Component

The collaboration with Fraunhofer FFB will be purposefully continued in this new context. Prof. Kampker will remain affiliated with Fraunhofer FFB through selected scientific projects as well as industrial and funded initiatives. “Achim Kampker helped shape the early stages of Fraunhofer FFB and provided important impetus for the development of our institute. In doing so, he has made a significant contribution to establishing Fraunhofer FFB as a key player in battery cell research and production in Germany and Europe. Prof. Jens Tübke and Prof. Simon Lux will continue to lead Fraunhofer FFB. This ensures continuity in our collaboration with customers and partners.
