Battery Energy Storage System

Comprehensive assessment for industrial applications

Safely assessing and integrating stationary energy storage systems

Fraunhofer FFB and the PEM at RWTH Aachen University support companies in the technical, economic, and environmental evaluation of stationary energy storage systems. By combining perspectives at the cell, system, and energy levels, they provide a solid basis for decision-making regarding investments, tenders, and strategies—ranging from benchmarking and system evaluation to technology analyses and life-cycle assessments.

Possible project focus areas

Today, stationary energy storage systems must be evaluated on a sound technical, economic, and environmental basis in order to support investment and system decisions. Fraunhofer FFB and the PEM at RWTH Aachen University provide an integrated basis for analysis and decision-making.

Concrete Analysis & Benchmarking

  • Comparison of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for Specific Applications
  • Market, Technology, and Competitive Analyses (BESS, Cell Chemistry, Systems)

Factors Influencing Investment Decisions

  • Key metrics-based decision-making criteria for costs, performance, scalability, and operational limits
  • Support for technology and investment decisions

Sustainability & System Evaluation

  • Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for Complete Storage Systems
  • Identification of Ecological Hotspots and Development of CO₂ Reduction Measures

Cooperation partner

PEM Chair of RWTH Aachen

The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University has been supporting Fraunhofer FFB since the very beginning of the “FoFeBat” project. The experts at PEM support the project as experienced partners and, together with the Fraunhofer Society, develop key elements of strategy and technology development as well as building and production planning. In addition, PEM assists with communication with current and future industry partners.
