InnoAktiv

Research project: “Development and Demonstration of Material, Process, and Equipment Innovations in Cell Activation for Battery Cell Production”

Brief description

The »InnoAktiv« project aims to significantly accelerate and improve cell activation in the production of large-format lithium-ion batteries through innovative materials, processes, and equipment. The goal is to reduce the process time from the current ten days, thereby cutting costs, energy consumption, and CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the project targets improved cell performance with longer lifespan and lower internal resistance. The innovations will be demonstrated in near-series production lines, strengthening the competitiveness of European battery manufacturing.

Work schedule

The work plan of »InnoAktiv« is divided into seven work packages (WP). It begins with project and technology management, followed by the development of benchmarks, requirements profiles, and data collection. Next, process development and material analysis are carried out, then innovative self-discharge tests are developed, and finally, the innovations are scaled up and demonstrated in a research production line. The project concludes with analysis and exploitation of the results. The work packages run partly in parallel and build on each other to ensure efficient achievement of the project goals.

Utilization of results

The »InnoAktiv« project delivers innovative processes, materials, and equipment for cell activation in battery cell manufacturing. Key results include reduced process times, lower costs and energy consumption, and improved cell performance. Exploitation is achieved through scientific publications, patents, integration of innovations into industrial plants, and training of specialists. The developed technologies and methods are directly utilized by industrial partners and research institutions for new products, services, and follow-up projects. These results strengthen the competitiveness of the German and European battery industry.
