Fundamentals of Modern Lithium-Ion Batteries
To explain modern battery cells, we first examine their historical development, from the Voltaic pile and the Daniell cell to today’s high-energy-density lithium-ion systems. This demonstrates that lithium-based batteries, in particular, currently offer the highest specific energy density and are used in numerous applications – from consumer electronics and industrial applications to power tools and electric vehicles.
A key factor influencing battery performance is cell design, which determines energy and power density as well as safety characteristics. There are three main cell formats: Prismatic cells offer high safety due to their sturdy casing and are suitable for energy storage systems; pouch cells are lighter and more flexible and are primarily used in compact devices; while round cells are cost-effective to manufacture but have disadvantages in terms of packing density and thermal management.
