The Slitter | Slitting Technology in Battery Cell Manufacturing

How it works, areas of application, and potential uses at Fraunhofer FFB

Slitting is the process of cutting electrode material into narrow strips that are required for cell production. In this process, the pre-coated electrodes, which are stored in wide rolls, are cut into narrower rolls as needed to enable subsequent processing.

The EvoSlitter from Kampf-LSF GmbH & Co. KG is a state-of-the-art cutting system that has been specially developed for processing electrode materials. This system is designed for use in clean room conditions and ensures precise cutting and winding.

The most important technical specifications at a glance:

  • Nominal speed from 5 to 150 m/min
  • Substrate width from 200-800 mm
  • Max. coating width: 790 mm
  • Cuttable material thickness cathode, aluminum: 10 μm – 30 μm; coating approx. 30 μm – 225 μm per side
  • Cuttable material thickness anode, copper: 5 μm – 30 μm; coating approx. 30 μm - 225 μm per side
  • Cutting system: shear cut, up to 12 knives, 2 x edge trimming with suction of narrow edge strips
  • Cutting width ≥ 23 mm achievable
